Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

The Australian Resuscitation Council (Guideline 7- Automated External Defibrillation in Basic Life Support) recommends an AED should be applied to people who are unresponsive and not breathing normally as soon as it becomes available so a shock can be delivered if necessary. There are many AED’s on the market and they all work in a similar manner to help in restoring effective heart function. Institute of Education and Training First Aid Trainers teach a simple 3 step strategy for using an AED as part of basic life support: Turn them on, Put them on, Carry on. This aligns with the recommendations to commence CPR for all people who are collapsed and not breathing adequately and to apply the AED as soon as it becomes available, then follow the prompts. To receive training in CPR and AED use, or to purchase an AED contact the institute of Education and Training. www.ioet.com.au

April is the “First A” month of the year. The first month starting with the letter A. On the First of April don’t be a fool when it comes to your First Aid training and First Aid equipment. Institute of Education and Training ( www.ioet.com.au) promotes regular checking of your equipment and consideration to first aid training renewal and CPR skills refresher in line with the Australian Resuscitation Councils recommendations. One way to ensure regular review of equipment or training is to put a recurring date in your calendar.  Consider “First A for your first aid” as a renewal prompt on the First of April each year. Put “First Aid: check our equipment and our training” in your electronic diary on your phone or other device now for First of April and set it as an annual alarm. Encourage your professional network or the business you deal with to do the same. This one simple, meaningful, set and forget action can remind you to check your first aid equipment and check your training at least each year. Check that your equipment is easily accessible, in good condition and yourself or staff you work with have currency in your CPR or first aid training. To access first aid training or first aid equipment contact your provider or get in touch with us at Institute of Education and Training www.ioet.com.au

Top Tips for Holiday Health

A hospital trip is not how anyone should spend the holidays, but as people slip into holiday mode, a momentary lapse in concentration is all it takes to end up in an ED.

Mr Michael Maw, Director and Clinical Lead at The Institute of Education and Training liked these top tips for holiday health posted in an article last year by Queensland Health.

Top tips for holiday health

  • Moderate alcohol consumption, particularly on New Year’s Eve. Don’t drink and drive or text and drive.
  • Prepare and store foods properly: Don’t leave food in the heat and keep leftovers in the fridge for only a few days
  • Ensure Christmas gifts like bicycles and scooters are accompanied by protective gear like helmets and kneepads and are used under appropriate supervision
  • Be careful when using new kitchen appliances and power tools, particularly under the influence of alcohol
  • Keep a close eye on children, particularly around water
  • If using a ladder, ensure another adult is assisting you for safety and that you are not under the influence of alcohol or prescription drugs
  • Make sure you have scripts for regular medication filled before you holiday
  • On hot days drink plenty of water, minimise physical activity, wear light clothing and avoid alcohol
  • Keep an eye on loved ones and neighbours, particularly the elderly living alone
  • Be trained in First Aid and CPR
  • Have a well stocked First Aid kit available

Mr Michael Maw, Director and Clinical Lead for the Institute of Education and Training says “It’s always good to make sure you have your first aid training current and up to date. This provides you with the best opportunity to respond in a timely and accurate manner when dealing with unforeseen injury and illness.

The Institute of Education and Training offers courses in First Aid & CPR training in Wagga Wagga (NSW) and Mornington (VIC). Courses can be found on our website by clicking here or by contacting Michael on 0406365442.  IOET also has first aid kits available now. Have a look here.

Here are some contact  numbers that are important not only this time of year but all year round:

Emergency: People who are experiencing heart or breathing problems or who are in need of urgent medical attention should always attend their local hospital emergency department or call triple zero (000).

Non-urgent: If it is not life-threatening, contact your GP. Access the National Health Service Directory at www.nhsd.com.au to find one in your area.

Health advice: Call 13 Health (13 43 25 84) for medical advice 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with Registered Nurses available to give qualified advice.

Mental Health Support: Lifeline on 13 11 14 for 24/7 crisis support, or beyoundblue.org.au or 1300 224 636 for 24/7 mental health advice and information.

First Aid over Christmas – New Year

With the Christmas – New Year period upon us, it is a good time to remember this time of year traditionally see’s the number of people injuring themselves or becoming unwell increase. I thought it was valuable to post information from articles from last year that I felt contained good information for us all to reflect on at this time.

Last year, Emergency Department specialist Dr Bill Lukin said ED presentations jumped over the Christmas-New Year period with alcohol and stress contributing to preventable accidents. Dr Lukin went on to say:
“A hospital trip is not how anyone should spend the holidays, but as people slip into holiday mode, a momentary lapse in concentration is all it takes to end up in an ED. It’s a time of year when people do more, consume more alcohol and take more risks than they normally would, and often all three at the same time. As a result we see an increase in a range of presentations to our EDs from serious road accident trauma to minor sprains, cuts, bruises and bites. “The scope and severity of injuries varies from people who’ve had too much to drink and fallen into campfires or sustained broken bones or cuts falling off bikes; people with adverse reactions to drugs or eye injuries resulting from using power tools. “Warm summer weather can also lead to heat-related presentations, particularly for the elderly or those with chronic medical conditions, so it’s important to stay hydrated. We also ask the community to be extra careful when it comes to cooking and camping. Our burns team was kept busy with patients admitted to the unit with injuries that could have been avoided such as scalds and burns from hot oil splashes, throwing petrol or metho on to camp fires or BBQs and exploding gas bottles.”

Dr Lukin said ED staff also saw an increase in mental health presentations over the holidays. While most of us think of the holidays as a time for celebration it can be a lonely time for people experiencing severe stress, anxiety or mental illness and may trigger depression and increase the risk of self-harm. It’s important we remember to look out for those who are vulnerable.

Silly season top 10:

  • Alcohol intoxication
  • Chest pain
  • Mental health issues
  • Low abdominal pain
  • Sprains and broken bones; falling off ladders, skateboards, bikes and scooters, slipping around pools
  • Trauma – car accidents
  • Poisoning/Substance/Drug overdose
  • Gastro
  • Heat stroke/exhaustion and extreme sun burn
  • Animal bites and stings

Snake bites at school! How important is First Aid training for educators?

I read a Nine News article this morning that reported a student was bitten by a snake whilst waiting for her music class in Mandurah. The student was sitting outside her music class at Meadow Springs Primary School yesterday when she said she felt a tingling sensation on her leg.

This started me thinking about how often this would occur in our school system, so I went googling and to my surprise, it occurs more often than not.

19th September 2018 Nine News reported: “A Perth mother is warning others about knowing how to treat a snake bite after her daughter was bitten at school…. It is understood this isn’t the first snake bite to happen on the school’s grounds.”

11th July 2018 the Sunshine Coast Daily reported: “Paramedics were called to Stella Maris Catholic Primary School in Maroochydore at approximately 10.40am to reports of a snake bite.  A child has been transported to Sunshine Coast University hospital after a possible snake bite this morning.”

23rd April 2018 the Townsville Bulletin reported: “A 54-year-old man was transported to hospital in a stable condition after being bitten by an unidentified snake at a school this morning. Paramedics were called to Heatley Secondary College at 8.07am.”

The Institute of Education and Training (IOET) has provided First Aid training and CPR training to schools in Victoria and NSW.  A key topic in our First Aid training is how to recognise and provide first aid to people who have been bitten by a snake.

The Institute of Education and Training continue to provide purpose packaged snake bite kits to schools, industry and communities.

IOET Director, Mr Michael Maw, an Emergency Nurse Practitioner, has treated many snakebites in his career, both within the community setting and the hospital setting.

Michael believes it is important to have the correct First Aid kit to be able to provide the best first aid treatment you can. “Currently, many first aid kits do not have the best bandages available to correctly treat a snake bite effectively. It is important people undertake regular first aid training and keep up to date with the changes that occur over time in providing safe and effective first aid.”

Michael is the lead clinical adviser and trainer for all First Aid Training at the Institute of Education and Training. To book into a course with Michael, go to IOET website at www.ioet.com.au and click on the Register Now tab. This will take you to our upcoming First Aid and CPR Training courses. If you want to purchase IOETs specifically packaged Snake Bite kits go to our IOET website at www.ioet.com.au and click on our Shop tab.

Stay safe and keep your eyes open for snakes. This is the time of the year they are becoming active.

First Aid Training Mornington

After providing First Aid Training in Mornington for the past 3 years, here we go at our first blog.

The Institute of Education and Training is a Registered Training Organisation (RTOID:41300). We started our journey back in 2015 when company Directors, Eddie Dunn and Michael Maw, decided to expand their training opportunities into the world of Nationally Accredited vocational training.

After many months of creating IOET, we became registered with the Australian Skills and Qualifications Authority (ASQA).  Since then, we have undergone 2 ASQA audits and have been deemed fully compliant on both occasions with zero corrective actions or non-compliances recorded.  We are extremely happy with these results and believe they vouch for the quality of training and assessment you will receive when training with us.

If you are looking to do your First Aid training in Mornington, then give us a call at the Institute of Education and Training or IOET. You can contact us at www.ioet.com.au or book in through our First aid Training Register Now page.

Our past attendees have overwhelmingly enjoyed the experience of their First Aid Training in Mornington and surrounding suburbs.

Adult PAD-Pak

The Pad-PaPAD-PAK-03k system is unique to HeartSine and saves you in many ways. Firstly it contains both battery and pads in one simple to replace cartridge. So there is only ever one expiry date and only ever one component to replace. We notify you prior to the 4 year expiry. Rather than have a large and expensive (and heavy) battery in a device that may never be used but costs you a lot to replace the battery, HeartSine have come up with the single-event pad-pak concept. After an event you have to replace the pads on any defibrillator – so its no harder to replace a pad-pak. And this means less weight, less cost, less confusing overlapping expiring components. And if you have a genuine event, we will give your replacement pad-pak free (subject to some simple terms and conditions).

The Pad-Pak-03 is for use on victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest from 8 years of age (or 25kg) upwards.
