Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

The Australian Resuscitation Council (Guideline 7- Automated External Defibrillation in Basic Life Support) recommends an AED should be applied to people who are unresponsive and not breathing normally as soon as it becomes available so a shock can be delivered if necessary. There are many AED’s on the market and they all work in a similar manner to help in restoring effective heart function. Institute of Education and Training First Aid Trainers teach a simple 3 step strategy for using an AED as part of basic life support: Turn them on, Put them on, Carry on. This aligns with the recommendations to commence CPR for all people who are collapsed and not breathing adequately and to apply the AED as soon as it becomes available, then follow the prompts.
